(Mir-Ali Hosseini, Paris) Audit of 583 State Enterprises Shows 12 Trillion Loss in One Year • The audit division of the finance ministry said 583 of the 1,705 state-owned enterprises it audited had a total loss of 12 trillion rials (approximately $1.5 billion) in the fiscal year that ended on March 20, 2004. The total profit of the state-owned companies was 3 percent of their total assets, which is too little considering that government banks pay 20 percent interest to depositors. Meanwhile, state-owned enterprises consumed 65 percent of the government's budget for their expenses. Court Rules against Health Ministry in Contaminated Blood Transfusion Case • A court in Tehran found the health ministry and the national blood bank guilty of negligence in offering blood contaminated with the HIV virus to scores of hemophiliac patients, who later filed a class action suit. (Leyli Sadr) Conservative Majles Elects Supreme Leader's In-Law as Temporary Speaker • The conservative majority of the seventh session of the Majles elected the Supreme Leader's in-law Gholamali Haddad-Adel as its temporary speaker. Haddad-Adel's son is the husband of one of Supreme Leader's daughters. The vote received by Haddad-Adel shows that the majority of the Majles are followers of the Supreme Leader, Tehran University political science professor Sadeq Zibakalam tells Radio Farda. In addition to the Haddad-Adel's bloc in the Majles, there is another bloc, made up of relatively moderate conservatives who are loyal to former president Hashemi-Rafsanjani, he adds, noting independent conservatives will form another bloc. It is unlikely that in the future the Haddad-Adel bloc, which calls itself “builders of Islamic Iran” (Abadgaran), will retain the unity it demonstrated during the first days of the new Majles.
