Representatives from Iran spent the day scrambling to delete a provision calling for the cancellation of Tehran's plans to build a heavy-water research reactor and to start operations at a uranium conversion plant, news agencies reported. • “With the ongoing trend, we have no moral commitment any more to suspend uranium enrichment,” President, Mohammad Khatami said today in Tehran. His tough words deepened the rift between Iran and IAEA, as the agency's governing board was preparing a resolution that “deplores” Tehran's less-than-full cooperation. If the draft resolution is adopted by the IAEA board of governors, Iran will not allow any more inspections of its nuclear sites, Khatami added. • “Iran is engaging in a “full court press of intimidation,” US envoy to IAEA Kenneth Brill said today, speaking of Iran's efforts to get the members of the IAEA board of governors to soften the language in the draft resolution published yesterday. Washington still believes Iran is trying to hide a weapons program, Brill said. • European Union leaders are set Friday to demand “full transparency” from Iran over its nuclear program while also pledging efforts to deepen ties with the Islamic Republic. In draft summit conclusions, the EU was to call on Iran to cooperate fully with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) “in a spirit of full transparency in relation to its nuclear program.” Iran Continues to Interrogate al-Qaeda Detainees • Interrogation of al-Qaeda detainees continues as their trial for terrorist acts within Iran nears, foreign policy secretary of the supreme national security council Hossein Mousavian said in Vienna. Trade Minister Criticizes Liberalization of World Trade • In a speech at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, trade minister Mohammad Shariatmadari criticized the liberalization trend in world trade. Deputy trade minister for economic planning Farhad Dezhpasand said Iran's share of world trade has fallen from 0.5 percent in 1978 to 0.34 percent in 2002. Judiciary Arrests 20 in Fatal Moonshine Distribution • So far, 20 persons have been arrested for their involvement in the production and distribution of home-made vodka that has killed at least 22 people, Shiraz judiciary chief Hosseinali Amiri said, adding that 90 people suffered serious illnesses from the drink, five of whom were blinded. Five of the victims had AIDS and many of them had criminal records, he added. Lahiji who heads the Paris-based society for defense of human rights in Iran, adds that Iran and EU rejected requests by this organization and several other independent human rights groups for attending the meetings. The only human rights organization invited to the talks was the Amnesty International. (Amir-Mosaddegh Katouzian) • The Islamic Republic rejects secular and liberal concept of human rights, deputy judiciary chief Mohammad-Javad Larijani said at the end of EU-Iran human rights talks in Tehran. • Human rights conditions in Iran are better than that of neighboring countries, President Khatami said. He added that, for improving human rights conditions, “we have to compare ourselves not with the west but with neighboring countries. Iran-UAE Fishing Dispute • Tensions between Iran and United Arab Emirates over the three Persian Gulf islands deepened last week as the two countries arrested fishermen and seized fishing boats for trespassing. UAE is generally silent about them, but Iran is using these incidents for domestic reasons, former UN envoy Saeed Rajai Khorasani tells Radio Farda. The US silence about the matter does not mean that US is not pleased with the growing tentions, because anything that ruins Iran's relations with its neighbors delights the US, he says. But this discussion will not go on for long, since Iran and UAE are both interested in broadening their good relations, he adds.
