Montazeri, former designated successor to Ayatollah Khomeini as the Supreme Leader has been held under house arrest since October 1997 after he criticized the absolute rule of the Supreme Leader and his lavish trips. Tehran political observers note that the worsening of Ayatollah's illness made his prolonged captivity a liability for his captors. (Siavash Ardalan) Reformist Clerics Publish New Newspaper * The daily organ of Tehran's municipal government Hamshahri, Iran's top selling newspaper, resumed publication after a 10-day ban. Meanwhile, a reformists cleric, MP Rasul Montakhabnia, member of the society of militant clergy (Maj'ma-e Rohaniyoon-e Mobarez), started publishing a new daily. He said his Nasim-e Saba (Morning Breeze) would not be an organ of the Maj'ma, but would generally reflect its views. (Ali Sajjadi) Reformists Newspapers Campaign for Tehran Council Seats * Several reformist journalists began a campaign to fill a majority of seats in the upcoming elections for the 15-man Tehran city council. However, it is expected that most of them would be disqualified in the election boards' vetting process. (Pedram Afarinesh, Tehran) Oil University Begins Internet University * The Oil University's deputy announced that it began classes on the Internet for its undergraduate accounting program. More Internet classes would follow. Radio Farda's Paris-based education commentator Sa'id Peyvandi says Internet classes would help Iran's universities to hire teachers who live abroad. (Nazi Azima) Iran-India Discuss North-South Corridor, Sign Seven Pacts * President Khatami and his delegation signed seven pacts with India, including one on security and military cooperation. Pakistan foreign ministry spokesman Aziz Ahmad Khan said reports about India-Iran military cooperation against Pakistan were baseless. (Baktash Khamsehpour) * Through the so-called north-south corridor, discussed during President Khatami's official visit to New Delhi, Indian goods would be shipped through Iran to Russia and Europe 40 percent faster and 30 percent cheaper than through the Suez Canal. (Fereydoun Khavand) Qom's Closed Unisex Medical University Admits Fresh Students * Qom's Fatemieh, Iran's only women's medical university, and the only medical institution that exclusively treated women, announced that it would begin admitting new students, two months after it had been reportedly closed by the healthcare and medical education ministry. Radio Farda's Paris-based education commentator Sa'id Peyvandi says the Guardians Council rejected the Majles legislation that would have placed all the higher education institutions that have been set up by various organizations under the ministry of higher education. He adds that the conflict over the Fatemieh school began two years ago when its students protested against the poor quality of its medical education, too many non-science courses in its curriculum, and the lack of clinical education. (Nazi Azima) Majles Rejects Government Bill to Increase Local Council Members * The Majles rejected the government's urgent bill to increase the number of seats in some of the city and village councils three weeks before the upcoming elections. The interior ministry submitted the bill after the Guardians Council rejected the Majles legislation to reform the local councils' law. (Jamshid Zand) Persian Programs on Tajikistan TV * Persian dramas and TV series produced in Iran by the government's radio-TV monopoly and music videos and concerts of Los Angeles-based pop musicians, are equally popular on Tajikistan TV. Abr Imamov, deputy director of Tajikistan television tells Radio Farda that he is looking forward to co-productions with Iranian TV. A young TV viewer tells Radio Farda that every TV household in Tajikistan was excited about Pedarsalar (Patriarch), an Iranian series. Tajikistan TV is working on a major program celebrating the life and songs of Persian pop music performer Googoosh, 52, who moved out of Iran in 2000 after 20 years of silence. The special will air next month on Googoosh's birthday. (Shahnaz Kamalzadeh, Dushanbe) . بازداشت خانگي پنج ساله آيت الله حسينعلي منتظري، فردا، سه شنبه، خاتمه خواهد يافت. تصميم به پايان دادن به حصر آيت الله منتظري، در بالاترين سطوح قدرت در جمهوري اسلامي گرفته شد. يك مقام وزارت كشور گفت شوراي عالي امنيت ملي در بخشنامه اي به استانداران قم و اصفهان، راهنمائي هاي براي چگونگي برخورد با تشنج هاي احتمالي در پي رفع حصر از آيت الله منتظري ارائه داد. ظاهرا مقامات بلندپايه جمهوري اسلامي نتيجه گرفتند كه با توجه به اخبار در باره بيماري آيت الله منتظري، ادامه حصر او به مصلحت نظام نيست.
