(Camellia Entekhabi-Fard, Washington) Judiciary Arrests 4000 Pro-Democracy Protesters • Prosecutor general Ayatollah Abolnabi Namazi said 4000 have been arrested across Iran since the start of pro-democracy demonstrations in Tehran and other major cities. He said 800 were arrested in Tehran, but 40 percent of all those arrested were immediately freed, he said. “Currently there are 2,000 people who are still in prison, among whom there are not many students," he claimed, giving the first official figures for the number of detainees across Iran. A student demonstration against privatization of some university facilities spiraled into almost two weeks of virulent anti-regime demonstrations around Tehran University and across the country. The interior ministry denied students the permit to march on the anniversary of the July 9, 1998, police attack on university dorms, but student activists vowed to rally anyway, and in an open letter to President Khatami asked him to resign if he finds himself unable to act. (Leyli Sadr, Washington) Students Spokesman Says July 9 Rally Will Go On, Despite Government Ban • Member of the association of Islamic student councils Hadi Lotfi tells Radio Farda that no one knows where the arrested students have been taken to and by whom. He estimates that more than 50 Tehran University students have been arrested. He says the association and the Islamic student councils believe that the July 9 demonstrations should go on any way possible. (Amir-Mosaddegh Katouzian, Washington) • The pro-democracy demonstrations and the violent crackdown that followed, has deepened the rift between the two factions, reports The Wall Street Journal. In a special weekend package, Radio Farda broadcasts interviews with eyewitnesses that describe the injuries of the beaten students and the damages to the students dorms and personal belongings after the plainclothes security force's attack. (Nazi Azima, Prague) • Plainclothes security force arrested student leader and secretary of the association of Islamic student councils Abollah Momeni, a witness told the state-owned Students' news agency ISNA. He was picked up as he was talking to fellow students at the gate of the Tehran Teacher's College. (Nazi Azima) • Wife of student activist leader and founder of the Democratic front, Heshmatollah Tabarzadi tells Radio Farda that she has no news of her husband since he was detained again on June 21, probably, she adds, because of his interviews with foreign radios during which he urged people to follow-up on their demands. (Alireza Taheri, Prague) • Member of the Majles national security and foreign relations community Reza Yusefianian, who was arrested briefly along with fellow MP Safai Farahani during the Tehran University unrest, called the prosecutor's charge that MP's stirred the unrest, absurd. He said the police invited several MPs to help calm the situation. Farahani's son is among those detained by the judiciary. Tehran MP Ansari-Rad said the prosecutor did not allow the MPs to meet with the arrested students. A source at the Vienna-based UN Commission told Radio Farda that the commission's head believed that under current circumstances, the delegation, that was supposed to arrive in Tehran a week ago, could not do its work. Reza Moini, in charge of the Iran desk at the Paris-based press freedom advocacy group Reporters San Frontiers, tells Radio Farda that it is common for the Islamic regime to renege on its promises and commitments on human rights. He cites a letter Tehran judiciary chief Alizadeh wrote to him a year ago that promised the release of the nationalist-religious coalition members from jail. He says RSF has given to the UNHRC to the EU commission of human rights.a list of Iran's unfulfilled promises. He says he foresees a bleak future for journalism in Iran, considering the continued arrests of the journalists and the recent pressure on the news agencies not report on social unrest. (Camellia Entekhabi-Fard, Washington) Father of Jailed Student Activist Says They Want to Arrest All Educated People • Father of medical school graduate Farzad Hamidi, a board member of the Democratic Front, tells Radio Farda that his son has been arrested for the fourth time, and is being detained in the Qasr prison, where he has been beated. Farzad is being denied contact with the outside world, after he told his father of the beatings in jail. He says the beating, which resulted in broken chest bone in three places, has been confirmed by an official coroners' examination. (Amir-Mosaddegh Katouzian, Washington) Iran's Proxy Influence in Iraq • Iraqi tribal leaders warned Iraq-based British commanders that units of the Badre Brigade, trained and armed by Iran, have established influence in parts of southern Iraq where six British soldiers were ambushed on Tuesday, reports London's The Times. Kurdish forces quickly established security in northern Iraq, elected local councils, opened stores and brought back the normal life. Kurdish minister of justice is concerned that the chaos of the south might spread to the north, writes The Financial Times. (Shahran Tabari, London) Irant to Start Drilling for Oil in the Caspian • Head of Iran's Caspian oil company Mohammad-Hossein Dana said Iran will soon begin drilling for oil in Iran's section of the Caspian Sea. His statement indicates that Iran has given up on its claim on 50 percent of the Caspian resources, a process that started under former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, when Iran began negotiating with the former Soviet republics. (Alireza Taheri, Prague) Tolstoy Translator Describes Torture in Jail • In a letter to President Khatami, jailed writer and Tolstoy translator Alireza Jabari says he was tortured during his 40 days in solitary confinement in an outfit called “the joint judiciary-police staff headquarters.” (Alireza Taheri, Prague) . روزجمعه به نقل از دادستان کل جمهوري اسلامي اعلام شد درجريان تظاهرات اخيرايران، جمعا 4 هزارنفر درسراسر کشوربازداشت شدند. وي تعداد بازداشت شدگان تهران را 800 نفراعلام کرد وگفت 40 درصد ازبازداشت شدگان بلافاصله آزاد شدند. ليلي صدر (راديو فردا): خبرگزاري دانشجويان ايران وخبرگزاري نيمه رسمي کارايران موسوم به ايلنا به نقل ازآيت الله عبدالنبي نمازي دادستان کل جمهوري اسلامي گزارش دادند درجريان تظاهرات اخير، جمعا 4 هزارنفر در سراسر کشور بازداشت شدند. 40 درصد ازبازداشت شدگان بلافاصله آزاد شدند. آيت الله نمازي که براي نخستين بارارقامي رسمي درارتباط با کساني که در سراسر ايران بازداشت شده اند ارائه مي داد، افزود درحال حاضر 2 هزار نفرهمچنان در زندان به سر مي برند که تنها تعداد اندکي ازآنان دانشجو هستند. وي درمورد شهرتهران که کانون تظاهرات ده روزه 10 تا 20 ژوئن جاري بود، گفت 800 نفر درتهران بازداشت شدند. خبرگزاري رويتر درگزارشي نوشت تظاهرات تهران هنگامي آغاز شد که گروه کوچکي ازدانشجويان به خصوصي شدن برخي ازدانشگاه ها اعتراض کردند. اما اعتراض اين گروه به سرعت تبديل به تظاهرات گسترده اي عليه رژيم دراطراف دانشگاه تهران شد وبرخوردهاي سختي را با اعضاي سپاه پاسداران ونيروهاي بسيج به دنبال آورد. اين تظاهرات که جدي ترين تظاهرات درپي زد وخوردهاي 9 ژوئيه سال 1999 تهران بود، به شهرستان ها نيزسرايت کرد وطي آن تظاهرکنندگان به طرزبي سابقه اي عليه آيت الله خامنه اي رهبرجمهوري اسلامي شعاردادند. دامنه تظاهرات هنگامي بالا گرفت که دولت دست به سرکوب تظاهرکنندگان زد ودرجريان آن عده اي به سختي مجروح شدند و صدها تن بازداشت گرديدند. يکي از تظاهرکنندگان درشرايطي که هنوز جزئيات آن روشن نشده است، درشيرازجان خود را ازدست داد. به نقل ازآيت الله نمازي دادستان کل ايران گفته شد مقامات دولتي برگزاري مراسم سالگرد آشوب هاي ژوئيه سال 1999 را ممنوع اعلام کرده اند. رويتر درگزارش خود افزود سرکوب تظاهرات اخير، خشم گسترده دانشجويان ايران را درپي داشته ومحمد خاتمي رئيس جمهوري اصلاح طلب ايران را درفشاربيشتري قرارداده است. آقاي خاتمي ازحق دانشجويان درتظاهرات دفاع کرده، اما نظرات اواثرچنداني درنيروهاي امنيتي، قوه قضائيه ونهادهاي اطلاعاتي کشورنداشته است. درهمين حال، 160 تن ازفعالان دانشجوئي روزجمعه طي نامه سرگشاده اي به محمد خاتمي رئيس جمهوري، از وي خواستند تا وقت باقي است به دفاع ازحق اعتراض برخاسته وجلوسروصداها را بگيرد ودرغيراين صورت شجاعانه ازمقام خود استعفا کند. دادستان كل جمهوري اسلامي اعلام كرد درجريان تظاهرات اخير در سراسر کشور جمعا 4 هزارنفر، از جمله 800 نفر در تهران، بازداشت شدند كه اندكي بعد 40 درصد از آنها آزاد شدند. خبرگزاري رويتر نوشت تظاهرات صنفي دانشجويان تهران به سرعت تبديل به تظاهرات گسترده اي عليه رژيم دراطراف دانشگاه تهران شد وبرخوردهاي سختي را با نيروي امنيتي لباس شخصي به دنبال داشت. در شهرستان ها نيز مردم عليه رهبر جمهوري اسلامي شعار دادند. با سرکوب تظاهرات دامنه آن نيز بالا گرفت. عده اي به سختي مجروح شدند و يک تن نيز جان خود را ازدست داد. در حالي كه گفته مي شود مقامات دولتي برگزاري مراسم سالگرد 18 تير را ممنوع اعلام کرده اند، شماري از دانشجويان، مصمم به برگزاري اين مراسم، در نامه اي خطاب به رئيس جمهوري اسلامي نوشتند توجيه گر سياست ظالمانه و سركوبگرانه حكومت نباشد و استعفا دهد.
