Shahroudi, an Iraqi-born Shiite cleric, ran SCIRI before turning it over to the Hakim brothers, and it is widely known that he continued to be involved in the SCIRI as a conduit of the Islamic regime's largess. Mohsen Hakim says SCIRI, which had been supported by Iran's Islamic regime for the past 23 years, continues to maintain offices in Tehran to coordinate relations with the Iranian government and to offer services to Iraqi refugees in Iran. He adds that most of the “commanders” of SCIRI's armed division, the Badre Brigades, have moved to Iraq and “are now at the service of the Iraqi people.” Mohsen Hakim adds that the Iraqi Governing Council, of which his uncle, Ayatollah Mohammad-Baqer Hakim, 63, is a member, is an Iraqi institution created under the authority of the UN Security Council resolution 1483. (Farin Asemi) US Awaits Cuban Response on Satellite Jamming • The Bush Administration says it is still waiting for Cuba to formally respond to complaints about the jamming of the US-based Persian-language satellite television broadcasts to Iran, US State department spokesman Philip Reeker said on Monday. He said Washington is certain that the jamming originates in Cuba. (Kian Manavi) EU Warns Iran on Nukes, Terrorism and Human Rights • EU foreign ministers said in a statement issued in Brussels today that the EU will review its relations with Iran next September, after an expected report from IAEA's chief Mohamed Elbaradei on Iran's nuclear program. The EU foreign ministers demanded “urgent and unconditional acceptance” of the additional protocol of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, a clause that allows unannounced visits to nuclear sites. EU foreign ministers said Iran's refusal to cooperate with UN nuclear inspectors, its support for international terrorism, violations of human rights and its position on the Middle East peace, could cost it valuable diplomatic and economic relations. (Keyvan Hosseini) • Cold season in EU-Iran relations began with this statement. The EU foreign ministers' statement was a heavy blow to the Islamic regime's European diplomacy. (Fereydoun Khavand) Foreign Minister Rejects President Bush's Charge of Terrorism Support • Foreign minister Kamal Kharrazi denied President Bush's charge that the Islamic regime supports terrorism. He said Iran has fought terrorism, and has detained or extradited to their countries all al-Qaeda elements arrested inside its borders. (Baktash Khamsehpour) Khatami Asks Judiciary to Identify the Perpetrators of Canadian-Iranian Journalist's Murder in Police Custody • President Mohammad Khatami said the judiciary is responsible to find the perpetrator(s) of the murder in police custody of Canadian-Iranian photojournalist Zahra Kazemi, 54. Foreign minister Kamal Kharrazi said those responsible for Kazemi's death will be punished. Head of the Majles pro-reform faction Ali-Akbar Mohtashami said Khatami's emphasis on perpetrator or perpetrators means that the special panel did not find the answer to Khatami's main question in its probe of Kazemi's death. The panel's report, issued on Sunday, said Kazemi died of head injuries caused by a blow to her skull with a sharp object during interrogation by Tehran judiciary's security forces. It was reported that Kazemi's mother asked that her daughter be buried in her birthplace Shiraz. However, Kazemi's son said yesterday that his grandmother had given him the custody of his mother's body in an affidavit signed at the Canadian consulate in Tehran. (Ali Sajjadi) • Editors and publishers of Persian newspapers and magazines based in the US and Europe sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan demanding a UN probe into Kazemi's death. Shoaleh Irani, editor of the Sweden-based women's monthly Ava-ye Zan (Voice of Women) tells Radio Farda that the editors called for the transfer of Kazemi's body to Canada for an autopsy. She adds that due to the pressure from the Iranian community in Sweden, the Swedish government is following up the matter through the European Union. She says Kazemi's death will be seen as a turning point in the relations of foreign governments with the Islamic regime. (Parviz Mardani, Berlin) • Kazemi's son is pressuring the Canadian government through the media for help in persuading the Iranian government to return his mother's body to Canada. He said in an interview that he was frustrated with the “inaction” of Canadian government. (Maryam Aghvami, Toronto) • Judiciary chief Ayatollah Shahroudi assigned the investigation into Kazemi's death to Tehran prosecutor Said Mortazavi. Tehran-based lawyer and human rights advocate Ahmad Bashiri tells Radio Farda that the investigating magistrate, who will work under the Tehran prosecutor, would have legal means to continue his probe, even if it implicated his boss. (Amir-Mosaddegh Katouzian) • In a speech at the Majles today deputy chair of the Majles national security and foreign relations committee Mohsen Armin accused Tehran prosecutor Said Mortazavi of direct involvement in Kazemi's death, and called for his removal. He said Mortazavi should be tried for his unlawful attempts to suppress the news of Kazemi's death. MP Ali-Emami Rad defended Mortazavi as a “soldier of the revolution,” and accused reformists of siding with the US and Britain. His speech was followed by a verbal brawl that continued for an hour. (Arash Qavidel, Tehran) • Canadian foreign minister Bill Graham deplored Kazemi's death in police custody and said the Iranian government is answerable to the world community. (Nima Tamadon) Majles Speaker Accuses Guardians Council of Siding with the Conservatives • Majles speaker Mehdi Karrubi said he will continue negotiating with the Guardians Council on the Majles legislations to reform the election law and expand presidential powers. The two bills, rejected by the Guardians, seek to end the Guardians Council's role of vetting the applicants for candidacy in Majles elections, and would give the Islamic president the power to suspend judges' verdicts. Karrubi said after the death of Ayatollah Khomeini, the Guardians Council turned into a pro-conservative institution. Meanwhile, reformist Tehran MP Majid Ansari said the Guardians Council broke the law by opening its own election supervision offices in provinces. He said, instead of relying on the intelligence ministry's background checks on candidates, the Guardians Council has practically established a national intelligence gathering operation that parallels the intelligence ministry. (Jamshid Zand) Jailed Editor Asks Iranian Community in the West for Help • In an open letter from jail, editor of the Tehran monthly Gozaresh (Report) asked the Iranian community in the west for help. He said Tehran prosecutor Said Mortazavi jailed him in retaliation for an article in his monthly that criticized the prosecutor's “auxiliary powers.” Golbaf pointed out that one reason for his arrest was the cover art of the latest issue of his magazine. The cover depicts a line of policemen blocking pro-democracy protestors, an Iranian flag with a black bird on the top of its pole, and a group of religious leaders with their backs to the people. (Alireza Taheri) Journalists' Union Plans Day-Long Strike • The association of Iranian journalists announced that, with the approval of the majority of members, a day-long press strike has been planned for August 9, the national reporters' day. If carried out, the strike would be a first since the 1979 revolution. (Keyvan Hosseini) Judiciary Arrests Son, Secretary and Driver of Daily Asia • The judiciary arrested Aydin Jamshidi, 20, son of Iraj Jamshidi, editor of the Tehran economic daily Asia, along with Jamshidi's secretary and his driver, Jamshidi's wife, Saqi Baqerinia, Asia's managing editor, said today. Judiciary arrested Iraj Jamshidi last month after a smiling picture of Maryam Rajavi, wife of Mojahedin Khalq Organization (MKO) leader Masoud Rajavi, appeared in his newspaper. (Alireza Taheri) Students Charge IRGC of Torturing Detainees • The Internet site of the student Islamic council of the Amir-Kabir University said the arrested students were subjected to medieval tortures in the Evin prison, including heavy beating, sleep deprivation, thirst, hunger, force feeding of intolerable food, pouring hot water in ears and hours of loud sound. (Jamshid Zand) . پيمان پژمان (راديوفردا، بغداد): ژنرال ريكاردو سنچز، كه فرماندهي نيروهاي آمريكا در عراق است، نيم ساعت پيش به خبرنگاران گفت اطلاعاتي كه به او رسيده است حاكي است دو پسر صدام حسين در منزلي در موصل بودند كه مورد حمله نيروهاي آمريكا قرار گرفت، و كشته شدند. يكي از شبكه هاي تلويزيوني هم اين گزارش را تائيد كرد و گفت جسد دو پسر صدام حسين فردا از سوي نيروهاي ائتلاف به مردم عراق نشان داده خواهد شد تا در اين باره شكي نداشته باشند. بعد از اعلام اين خبر، در تمام بغداد صداي شليك گلوله به گوش مي رسيد و تبادل آتش بين نيروهاي ائتلاف و طرف ديگر، كه دقيقا نمي شود گفت كه هستند، در جريان بود به مدت حدود چهل دقيقه. بيژن فرهودي (راديوفردا): آيا غير از دو پسر صدام حسين كه كشته شدند، كسان ديگري هم از نزديكان صدام كشته شدند؟ پ. پ.: گفته مي شود كه روي هم رفته چهارنفر در اين منزل كشته شدند. دو تن از آنها عدي و قصي پسران صدام بودند. از دو نفر ديگر، يكي پسر قصي بود، و ديگري محافظ عدي بود. هويت آنها صددرصد تائيد نشده ب.ف.: آيا اطلاعي هست كه نيروهاي آمريكا به محل اختفاي صدام حسين پي برده باشند بعد از اين جريان؟ پ.پ.: هنوز مشخص نيست ولي يكي از شك هائي كه اينها هنوز دارند و فكر مي كنم ظرف يكي دو روز آينده مشخص بشود اين است كه آيا كسان ديگري هم در اين منزل بودند يا نه و آيا امكان اين بوده كه صدام در آنجا بوده يا نه. گفته مي شود كه يك نفر از اهالي خود موصل نزد نيروهاي ائتلاف رفته بود و از حضور اين ها در اين محل به آنها اطلاع داده بود ولي دقيقا در باره حضور يا عدم حضور صدام حسين خبري در دست نيست و امكان آن هم هست كه هنوز كسان ديگري در آن منزل زنده بوده باشند كه شايد بتوانند در باره صدام خبري به نيروهاي ائتلاف بدهند. ارتش آمريكا اعلام كرد عدي و قصي حسين، دو پسر صدام حسين، رئيس سابق حكومت عراق، در جريان تيراندازي با نيروهاي آمريكا در يك خانه امن در موصل، واقع در شمال عراق، كشته شدند. پسر 14 ساله قصي نيز يكي ديگر از چهارنفري است كه در اثر تيراندازي با نيروهاي آمريكا جان خود را از دست داد. محل اختفاي اين گروه از سوي يكي از اهالي موصل به نيروي ائتلاف نشان داده شده بود. نيروي ائتلاف قصد دارد اجساد آنها را فردا در معرض تماشاي مردم عراق قرار دهد. در پي انتشار خبر كشته شدن دو پسر صدام حسين، به مدت نيم ساعت در بغداد صداي تيراندازي شنيده مي شد بين نيروهاي آمريكا و طرف آنها كه هويت آن نامشخص است. تيراندازي بعد از نيم ساعت فروكش كرد. پيدا شدن مخفيگاه دو پسر صدام حسين، ممكن است نيروهاي ائتلاف را در يافتن خود او ياري دهد.
