Summary of Iran Stories in Today's BroadcastsBehnam NateghiSaturday, July 26, 2003 Failure of the EU's Constructive Dialogue with the Islamic Regime • The EU's policy of constructive dialogue failed to bring any reform to Iran, Italian daily Il Foglio writes today. The newspaper, published by the wife of Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi added that any attempt to bring peace and stability to the region would fail, so long as Ayatollah's are in power. The credit line former Italian information minister Lamberto Dini opened for Iran with the constructive dialogue, closed after the Supreme Leader's statement about the medium-range Shahab 3 missiles, Il Foglio writes, adding that Italy-Iran trade and industrial cooperation program set up by former prime minister Romano Prodi has been archived forever. (Ahmad Ra'fat, Rome) Criminal Court Arrests Five Security Officers in the Death of Canadian-Iranian Photojournalit • Criminal prosecutor issued warrants for the arrest of five security agents for murder of Canadian-Iranian photojournalist Zahra Kazemi, who died of head injuries she suffered during interrogation. (Amir Armin) • A special Majles commission summoned intelligence, health and justice and Tehran prosecutor Said Mortazavi to a hearing on the Kazemi's death. Canada recalled its Tehran ambassador over Iran's refusal to hand over Kazemi's body to her son for transfer to Canada. (Mahdieh Javid) • The culture ministry's director of the foreign press office Mohammad-Said Khoshbaf said Mortazavi forced him to issue the initial, false statement that said Kazemi died of brain seizure. Mortazavi denied the charge. (Leyli Sadr) • Reformists grasped Zahra Khatami's death as an opportunity to attack the conservative judiciary, particularly Tehran prosecutor Said Mortazavi, who has been recently promoted to the job after presiding over the arrests of scores of journalists and the closing of more than 100 mostly pro-reform newspapers as the Tehran judiciary's press court judge, writes the German daily Die Zeit. (Shahram Mirian, Cologne) • Paris-based press freedom advocacy group Reporters Sans Frontiers urged the EU to suspend its constructive dialogue with Iran until the perpetrators of the Kazemi's death were identified and punished. (Golnaz Esfandiari) • Italian press federation named July 29th the Zahra Kazemi day. (Leili Sadr) Father of Vancouver Teenager Accuses Islamic Government of Exploiting His Son's Death • The father of Vancouver teenager Keyvan Tabesh said the policeman who shot his son could not have known that he was an Iranian. “My son had blue eyes. He had a European face, like he was from England or Spain, not Iran. This is not racist,” Vancouver-based surgeon Dr. Nasser Tabesh told Canada's Globe and Mail. “The bullet that shot into my son's heart was shot at a Canadian teenager, not at someone from Iran,” he added. He said “[Iranian government] wants to use my son's death for its own purpose.” A policeman shot Keyvan Tabesh around 2 AM on July 14 after he allegedly struck at a vehicle with a machete in an apparent road-rage incident. Foreign ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi accused the Canadian police of “attacking” Iranian youth. Citing Canada's protest over the death in police custody of Canadian-Iranian photojournalist Zahra Kazemi, state-controlled Iranian media accused Canada of violating the rights of Iranian immigrants. • Canadian-Iranians said they support Canadian government and would wait for the result of Canada's investigation. Tabesh's death in Vancouver worsened the Iran-Canada relations, which had been strained over Zahra Kazemi's death. (Maryam Aghvami) Khatami's Job Plan Backfires, Says Business Owners' Association • President Khatami's job creation program did not create any new job opportunities, but put Iranian employers 9000 billion rials under debt, according to Abbas Palizdar, head of an association of business owners, Khaneh-ye San'atgaran (House of Industrialists). Palizdar, who runs Tab milk processing and bottling company in Vararmin, near Tehran, said the program that provided low interest loans to business owners who hired new fulltime workers, did not meet its goal of creating 300,000 jobs; and the 125,000 jobs that the labor ministry says the program created was also false. (Arash Qavidel, Tehran) Isfahan Clergy Court Seals Maddah's Charge • The Isfahan branch of the special court for the clergy said the charges against Mohammad Maddah, chief of staff of former Isfahan prayer leader Ayatollah Jaleledin Taheri, were sealed, according to Maddah's son' Mehdi. He said the intelligence minister has filed a complaint against his father. Unofficial sources said last week that Maddah has been arrested because he permitted the association of Islamic student councils (Dafter Tahkim Vahdat) hold a meeting in one of the mosques he controlled. Ayatollah Taheri resigned his position as the Isfahan prayer leader and representative of the Supreme Leader in protest against the regime's polices. Taheri said in Maddah's arrest he was the real target and offered to go to jail instead of his chief of staff. Iraqi police says thousands of Iranians enter Iraq every day though the wide open Sardasht area, and 2000 per day return to Iran though border posts.
