<b>BBG Chairman Sends Message of Support to Journalists on Reporter Day</b>
• US Broadcasting Board of Governors' chairman Kenneth Y. Tomlinson said in a message to Iranian journalists on the occasion of Iran's national reporter's day that the US international broadcasting promises to cover events in Iran by radio and television, bringing accurate news and information to all people, young and old. The full text of the message, aired in English and Persian on <b>Radio Farda</b>, follows.
• “Today, August 8th, journalists in Iran are celebrating National Reporters Day – and, as chairman of the Broadcasting Board of Governors, I'd like to recognize them – and lend support to the brave Iranians who are working hard to report the truth so freedom and democracy can be restored to their country.
“National Reporters Day was established to honor Iranian journalist Mahmoud Sarimee who was murdered in Afghanistan in 1998.
“This year, pro-reform journalists in Iran are asking that Canadian-born journalist Zahra Kazemi be honored on National Reporters Day. Ms. Kazemi died in government custody on July 10 after being arrested for taking photographs outside a prison in Tehran.
“Journalists – whose work is the oxygen of freedom – are under increasing pressure in Iran. The N-G-O Reporters without Borders says a total of 21 journalists are imprisoned in Iran, and many of them have been arrested in the past several months. We deplore any efforts to silence these journalists.
“By radio and television, U.S. international broadcasting promises to cover events in Iran, bringing accurate news and information to all people, young and old.”
<b>RadioFarda Special Broadcasts on Reporter Day</b>
• As nearly 800 Iranian writers, reporters, students and lawyers gathered at the offices of the trade union of journalists in Tehran to protest the suppression of press freedoms and the jailing of journalists and newspaper publishers, <b>Radio Farda</b> aired a series of special reports, including interviews with formerly jailed journalists and editors, now in exile, as well as recorded comments from those in jail. The reports also included interviews with spokesmen of international organizations, such as Reporters Sans Frontiers and the International PEN, who expressed their support for the jailed journalists and called for freedom of press in Iran.

بيژن فرهودي (ترجمه بيانيه كنت تاملينسون): امروز هشتم اوت، برابر با 17 مردادماه، خبرنگاران و نويسندگان در ايران، روز خبرنگار را گرامي مي دارندو من به عنوان رئيس هيات مديره سازمان سخن پراكني آمريكا مايلم از آنها قدر داني كرده و از اين ايرانيان شجاعي كه براي آگاه ساختن مردم از حقايق چنين سخت كوشي مي كنند، تا بتوانند آزادي و دمكراسي را به كشورشان بازگردانند، حمايت مي كنم.
روز ملي خبرنگار، به مناسبت بزرگداشت محمود صارمي، خبرنگار ايراني كه در سال 1998 در افغانستان كشته شد، برگزار مي شود.

ب.ف.: امسال روزنامه نگاران طرفدار اصلاحات در ايران خواستار آن شدند كه در اين روز، ياد خانم زهرا كاظمي، خبرنگار كانادائي ايران تبار گرامي داشته شود. خانم كاظمي پس از آنكه به خاطر عكسبرداري در خارج از زنداني در تهران دستگير شد، روز دهم ژوئيه، 19 تيرماه، هنگامي كه در بازداشت دولت بود، در گذشت. ژورناليست هائي كه كارشان در حكم اكسيژن آزادي است، تحت فشار روزافزوني در ايران هستند. سازمان غير دولتي گزارشگران بدون مرز مي گويد جمعا 21 روزنامه نگار و نويسنده در ايران زنداني هستند و بسياري از آنها طي چندماه گذشته دستگير شدند.
