Summary of Iran Stories in Today's BroadcastsBehnam NateghiMonday, September 29, 2003 EU Foreign Ministers Warn Iran on Nuclear Program • The EU-Iran new economic cooperation agreement may be scrapped if Iran did not “immediately comply” with the UN International Nuclear Energy Agency's demands for more stringent, impromptu inspections of its suspected nuclear facilities, EU foreign ministers warned today in the draft of a communiqué to be issued at the end of their meeting in Brussels. Iran would agree with the new inspection regime on the condition that it is allowed to continue its uranium enrichment program, which is for peaceful purposes, foreign minister Kamal Kharrazi said in New York. Presidents of the US and Russia urged Iran on Saturday to fully cooperate with the IAEA. “We want Iran to state unequivocally that there are no nuclear weapons possibilities that could be developed as a result of any nuclear program in Iran,” British Minister for Europe Denis MacShane said in Brussels. (Golnaz Esfandiari) • By insisting to keep its uranium enrichment program, the Islamic government aims to overcome the domestic opposition to signing the additional protocol, and wants to prove to the rest of the world that it does not unconditionally agree with the IAEA demands, observers said. (Bahman Bastani) • If signing the additional protocol is good for the country's national interest, as the reformist camp maintains, why the other camp calls it a “sin,” asks the reformist daily Shargh in an editorial. It urges the conservative faction to explain in more detail the reasons for its opposition. We condemn the whole world for bullying us, but we are not prepared to review, for future reference, how our own domestic disunity and inconsiderate past actions have provoked the mistrust of others, writes the Tehran reformist daily Aftab-e Shargh. (Behnam Nateghi, New York) • A team of the IAEA inspectors are due in Iran on Thursday, government spokesman Abdollah Ramezanzadeh said today. The peaceful use of nuclear energy is every nation's right and Iran will not give up its right, he added. (Ali Sajjadi) Kharrazi Says al-Qaeda was Active in Iran • Foreign minister Kamal Kharrazi told the Financial Times that the al-Qaeda detainees, whom he declined to identify, had committed crimes against Iran's national security by "establishing cells" to plot operations elsewhere. (Fariba Mavedat) Death Sentences for Political Prisoners Worries Human Rights Advocates • The society for defense of human rights in Iran in a statement issued today called for the abolition of the death penalty, and condemned the death sentences for two political prisoners Ramin Sharifi and Said Masouri. The news of the verdicts were given to him by the prisoners' families, the society's head Paris-based human rights lawyer Abdolkarim Lahiji tells Radio Farda. The families had not been informed of the prisoners' trials, he adds. A Kurdish Iranian, Sharifi is accused of membership in the Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP); and Masouri, who used to live in Norway on political asylum, is accused of being a Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) member, Lahiji says, quoting the two convicted prisoners' relatives. (Golnaz Esfandiari) Institute of Electric and Electronic Engineers Censors Its Iranian Members • The Institute of Electric and Electronic Engineers barred its members in Iran and four others countries, considered “rogue” states by the US, from publishing in its official journals. But other scientific organizations do not discriminate against scientists from these countries, leaving some observers to accuse IEEE of playing the rogue. “The IEEE's treatment of its members living in Iran and other embargoed countries has been a disgrace,” Ken Foster, a bioengineering professor at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and a former president of an IEEE chapter, tells Radio Farda. IEEE President Michael Adler tells Radio Farda that the ban on Iranian scientists was implemented to protect the association and its volunteer workers from possible lawsuits. (Mahdieh Javid) Pro-Reform Activists Stage Day-Long Hunger Strike • Scores of pro-reform political activists, journalists, lawyers and university professors began a day-long hunger strike at the offices of the Participation Front party in Tehran. The action is a form of protest against the jailing of political activists and journalists by the judiciary, Tehran-based lawyer Nemat Ahmadi, who took part in the hunger strike, or political fasting, tells Radio Farda. This kind of protest is rooted in the Iranian culture, he adds. (Golnaz Esfandiari) • Political activists in Tabriz held a group hunger strike today in support of the day-long hunger strike in Tehran, independent Tabriz-based journalist Ensafali Hedayat, who, along with 10 other Tabrizi journalist, took part in the hunger strike at the local offices of the Participation Front, tells Radio Farda. The strikers are worried that they may become targets of attacks by the plainclothes security forces, he adds. Tabriz University student activists support the action by fasting, but they may break their fasts in the university, instead of joining the journalists and others at the party's (Golnaz Esfandiari) Tehran Municipality Closes International Fairs Site • The Tehran municipal government closed the commerce ministry's international trade fairs' permanent exhibition grounds, citing code violations and traffic congestion. The City moved on the fair grounds after the commerce ministry declined to move it out of the city, deputy Tehran mayor Mohammad-Javad Mohammad-Zadeh said. Considering the government's commitments to foreign companies for upcoming exhibits, moving the site to another place is impossible, minister of commerce Mohammad Shariatmadari said. (Arash Qavidel, Tehran) German Court Sentences Convicted Spy to 30 Months in Prison • A German court convicted Iraj Sadri to 30 months in jail for spying on Germany-based anti-regime activists. Observers said he may serve his jail sentence in an open jail, to which he will have to report every night. (Parviz Mardani) Bribery Case against Rafsanjani's Son • Proving that Mehdi Hashemi, son of former president Ali-Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani, received $15 million in bribes from Norway's Statoil maybe difficult, since Swiss banks do not reveal the names of account owners, Forbes magazine writer Paul Klebnikov, author of last month's cover story on Rafsanjani's graft, tells Radio Farda. Newspaper Printing Plant Workers Demand Back Pay • Workers of two plants that print the radio-TV monopoly's daily newspaper Jam-e Jam staged a demonstration in front of newspapers offices to demand the payment of their overdue wages.
