<b>Relatives Asked the UN to Prevent the Expulsion of MKO Members from Iraq</b>
• Nearly 150 relatives of members of the Iraq-based anti-regime group Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) gathered in front of the Geneva offices of the UN Commission for Refugees to ask the UN to prevent the expulsion of the MKO rank and file from Iraq. A similar gathering was held in Iraq as a part of a worldwide campaign by human rights organizations, MKO lawyers and former members of the MKO to block implementation of the Iraqi governing council's decision to expel MKO members from Iraq by December's end. <b>Culture Ministry Issues 25 Licenses to New Newspapers and Magazines</b>
• The culture ministry's press supervision committee issued 25 publication licenses for two newspapers, 12 weeklies, three bi-weeklies and seven monthlies. It also agreed to recognize Tehran mayor Mahmoud Ahmadinezhad as the new managing editor of the Tehran municipal government's daily organ <i>Hamshahri</i>. Of the two new newspapers, <i>Eqtesad-e Pooya</i> is dedicated to economic issues, while <i>Etedal</i> will cover general news. Financial problems prevent many license holders from publishing. <b>Journalist Describes July 1999 Killing of Visitor by Plainclothes Forces in University Dorms</b>
• Family of Ezat Ebrahim-Nezhad, the only casualty of the July 1999 police and plainclothes forces' attack on the Tehran University student dorms, published a letter yesterday to protest the lack of judicial investigation into his death, despite the family's several pleas to the judiciary and Islamic government officials. A journalist, who published a detailed account of Ebrahim-Nezhad's death, tells <b>Radio Farda</b> that first they threw Ebrahimnezhad out of a fourth floor dorm's window. Then a person by the name of Hossein Safari, who was either a policeman or a member of the plainclothes security force, killed him with a bullet to his head. He adds he saw others being shot in the head by the attackers and the number of casualties must have been more than one. (Mahmonir Rahimi)
<b>Judiciary Announces 51 Medical Conditions for Legal Abortions</b>
• In what has been seen as the first move by an Islamic government towards legalization of abortion, the judiciary's coroner's office announced 51 medical conditions for legal abortions during the first 16 weeks of pregnancy. They include specific genetic or other disorders, in either the fetus or the mother. Such abortions would require a doctor's note, approval of both the pregnant woman and her husband, or a court order based on the coroner's opinion. (Ashkan Pazouki)
• Most deformed or retarded children are the result of their mother's efforts to abort them using abortion drugs which can be purchased on the black market, Tehran press reported, quoting officials. (Kian Manavi)
<b>Student Activist Batebi Returns to Jail after Furlough</b>
• After a few days of furlough, student activist Ahmad Batebi returned to jail. President Khatami said his talks with judiciary chief Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi-Shahroudi resulted in the release of Akbar Ganji and Ahmad Batebi, but it is not clear what kind of release, says spokesman of the Batebi support committee <b>Omid Habibinia</b>. Batebi was thrown in jail and received a death sentence following the July 1999 student uprising, after his picture holding up the bloody tee-shirt of a fellow protester appeared in foreign press. <b>Unemployment Insurance Fund Faces Big Deficit</b>
• The limited resources of the unemployment insurance fund that the national social security organization runs for its own workers cannot meet growing demand from the 60 percent increase in the number of the eligible recipients, head of the social security organization Golamali Basari said. The fund is faced with 80 billion rials deficit in Tehran alone, where the fund's income from workers' dues falls 50 percent behind its expenses. The fund provides support for 17,000 former social security workers who have lost their jobs or have been retired and are not eligible to receive benefits from the retirement fund, he added. The social security organization is the only institution in the country with an unemployment insurance fund. (Arash Qavidel)

بهمن باستاني (راديوفردا): کولين پاول، وزير امور خارجه آمريکا، گفت که اين کشور اميدوار است کره شمالي آنچه را که اين روزها در پيوند با ليبي گذشته و مي گذرد، به طور کامل ملاحظه کند و ديگران هم به اين زيرکي و خردورزي برسند. وزير امور خارجه آمريکا گفت: همين اميدواري را در مورد ايران داريم. پاول افزود: سوريه هم لازم است از اين چاهي که در همه اين سال ها براي خود کنده خارج شود.
به گزارش خبرگزاري فرانسه، معمر قذافي، رهبر ليبي، روز دوشنبه همين سه کشور ايران، سوريه و کره شمالي را خطاب قرار داد و از آنها خواست تا مانند ليبي خردمندي به خرج دهند. قذافي جمعه گذشته در اقدامي شگفت انگيز که به نظر ناگهاني آمد، اعلام کرد که همه برنامه هاي توليد تسليحات کشتار جمعي را متوقف مي کند و با امضاي پروتکل الحاقي به پيمان منع گسترش تسليحات هسته اي، به بازرسان بين المللي اجازه بازرسي سرزده از ليبي را مي دهد. بيانات قذافي در اين باره، مورد تاييد لندن و واشنگتن قرار گرفت و اعلام شد که اين تصميم قذافي در پي نه ماه مذاکره پنهاني آمريکا، بريتانيا و ليبي بوده است.
کولين پاول، وزير امور خارجه آمريکا که سه شنبه شب در يک گفتگوي راديويي در آمريکا سخن مي گفت، درباره سوريه اظهار داشت که سوريه در خطوط مرزي خود با عراق، همکاري خوبي با نظاميان آمريکا داشته، اما به گفته پاول، سوريه بايد رفتار خود در زمينه هاي ديگر را عوض کند. وزير امور خارجه آمريکا منظور خود از ضرورت تغيير رفتار سوريه را به طور مشخص در پيوند با تروريسم و پيامدهاي جنگ در عراق عنوان کرد و گفت: سوريه هنوز در نيافته که بايد دست از حمايت از تروريسم بردارد. پاول افزود: همچنين سوريه بايد همه پول هاي عراقي را که در بانک هاي خود دارد، به عراق برگرداند. به گفته پاول، سوريه گام هاي کوچکي در اين زمينه برداشته است. گزارش هاي تاييد نشده حاکي است که 250 ميليون دلار از دارايي هاي عراق در بانک تجارت سوريه که بانک دولتي است، سپرده شده است.
در مورد ايران، وزير امور خارجه آمريکا گفت که به عقيده او، جمهوري اسلامي ايران، اخيرا بيشتر به سمت جامعه بين الملل ميل کرده و روند اعتراف کردن به داشتن برنامه هايي را که پيشتر آنها را انکار مي کرده، آغاز کرده است. جمهوري اسلامي هفته گذشته پروتکل الحاقي به پيمان منع گسترش تسليحات اتمي را امضاء کرد. امضاي اين پروتکل در پي يک دوره تنش بين ايران و جامعه بين الملل در زمينه برنامه و فعاليت هاي هسته اي ايران انجام شد. دولت آمريکا اعلام کرده است که امضاي اين پروتکل، تنها گام نخستي است که ايران براي جلب اعتماد جامعه بين الملل در اين زمينه بر مي دارد. و بايد آن را با برداشتن گام هاي ديگر ادامه دهد.
