August 26, 2004 - Iran may be the October Surprise of this year’s US Presidential Election, Paris-based columnist William Pfaff argued yesterday in the International Herald Tribue. “One theory says that making the war bigger would make it better for US forces,” he wrote. “When President George Bush must eventually explain what has gone wrong in Iraq, it might be convenient to blame Iran,” according to unnamed former US officials quoted by Pfaff. He linked plan for a US military confrontation with the Islamic government to the neoconservative thinkers close to the US administration.
