Nationalist leader Khosrow Seif, secretary general of the Iranian National Party (Hezb-e-Melat-e-Iran) who went to jail after the 1997 student disturbances, tells RFE/RL that at the arrival of the New Year all prisoners forget prison for a moment. Ms. Nargess Mohammadi, wife of Taqi Rahmani, a jailed member of the nationalist-religious coalition, says relatives of the 19 accused members of the coalition plan to celebrate the New Year in front of Evin prison for a second year in a row. (Shahran Tabari, London) US President's New Year Message * In his New Year message to Iranians living in the US, President Bush said the US is united against terrorism and the one-million strong US Iranian community has participated in that effort by condemning the attacks, helping in the rescue effort and providing support for the victims' families. Also in the US, Michigan designated March 20 as Iran Day. (Homayoun Majd) State Department Spokesman Condemns Unelected Officials in Iran * So long as a handful of unelected Islamic Republic officials continue to thwart the reform process, the US will continue to support civil society in Iran, said the State Department spokesman. She adds that fashion shows are currently held in people's homes or rented halls featuring young Iranian models and latest European and knock-off designs. Elmira, a young girl in Isfahan, describes today's fashion for girls, which includes bell bottom jeans, red accessories, colorful scarves, dyed short hair and makeup. Nima, a young boy in Isfahan, says boys like shiny jeans and running shoes and they listen to hard rock. (Mahmonir Rahimi)
