U.N. Sharply Rebukes Iran over Women's Rights


A United Nations official says women in Iran have insufficient right of appeal against violence and are being sentenced to death on flimsy evidence. Yakin Erturk, the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women, said court evidence from an Iranian woman is worth half that of a man. Ms. Erturk added that women who had been raped face numerous obstacles in getting their cases fairly heard. She recommended judicial reforms and the abolition of the death penalty. Erturk made the comments at a news conference in Tehran after concluding an official visit to the country
