Police today dispersed a crowd protesting outside Tehran's Evin prison and calling for the release of all political prisoners. One of the organizers of the protest, Seifollah Akbari said police beat several protesters with batons and told them to leave immediately. Akbari said police detained to women and a man. There was no independent verification of Akbari's account. Earlier in the day, international human rights groups called on Iran to release all of its political prisoners inside the Evin prison. The groups, also joined by Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi, released a statement saying Iran's judiciary has over-ruled requests from prison authorities to give some detainees medical treatment. The statement comes two days before Iran is due to have a presidential election.
