HERITAGE: Isfahan Site Less In Danger of Losing UNESCO Credentials, Says Envoy
Decreasing the number of stories in a commercial tower planned for a corner of the historic square in Isfahan lessened the risk of the square losing its listing with UNESCO status as a World Heritage site, UNESCO envoy in Tehran Junko Taniguchi said.
UNESCO says Iran now risks having the site branded as “World Heritage in Danger” due to “uncontrolled urbanization.” UNESCO is set to decide its next step in a meeting in Suzhou, China, from June 28 to July 7.
“The municipality did not follow legal procedures when it issued the construction permit,” Siefollah Aminian, the head of Isfahan's Cultural Heritage Organization, complained to Reuters.
